Age is but only a number

In Ireland, societal norms have a tendency of influencing the manner in which people live their lives.
Typically, we begin school at five-years-old; decide our career at 18; complete college in our early 20s; get married by 30; have children by our mid 30s; dedicate ourselves to our profession until we are 65; and live gracefully in our retirement thereafter.
However, the reality of life is that nothing is so predictable. For many, deciding on a profession to dedicate their entire lives to at the typical college going age of 18 is not plausible.
Often, people will settle on something they are unsure of and begin down a path that cannot offer them the professional fulfilment they crave.
They later find themselves unhappy and of the opinion that they have gone too far to turn around and start over. However, the truth is that it is never too late to follow your ambitions.
At age 28, J K Rowling was a struggling single parent living on welfare. Two years later she finished the first manuscript of Harry Potter, and today is renowned as one of the most gifted authors of our age.
Morgan Freeman, arguably one of the most recognisable voices of modern times and a critically acclaimed actor, landed his first major movie role at the age of 52.
Age and societal pressures are not things that should limit us. They do not have the power to place obstacles in our paths that can prevent the fulfilment of our ambitions, professional or otherwise.
In the wise words of Mark Twain: “Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.”
So kick off those invisible shackles and follow your ambitions, for it is you and you alone who can define your limitations.
