R&D Manager

Our client, a leading medical device manufacturer is recruiting for a R&D Manager who be responsible for guiding and managing the body of work for R&D Department based in Mayo. The R&D Manager will have responsibility for the ensuring successful management of core business. You will also work closely with manufacturing globally to support through technical expertise the current base of products. The successful candidate will also have people management responsibility for R&D resources covering both scientific and engineering disciplines. The successful candidate will also work closely with other R&D Managers in the business to ensure the effective allocation of resources to complete R&D body of work. The successful candidate must operate at a senior level, be highly collaborative working with multiple functions and have demonstrated leadership capabilities. 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Core Business Initiatives Project Portfolio – identifying, evaluating and resourcing a range of projects required to ensure R&D support for Current Product Portfolio. This includes ensuring the correct expertise and knowledge base is available in R&D to support Engineering, Operations and Marketing groups for the current portfolio.
  • Project Management – planning, scheduling, documenting and initiating activities of resources you have responsibility for, in collaboration with other managers, to execute the R&D body of work including Core Business projects. Ensuring successful completion according to agreed upon schedules and corporate priorities. Taking initiative in completing critical tasks, which lead to progressive movement of projects. Reviewing technical product documentation for areas of assigned responsibility.
  • People Management – providing the overall direction of all Associates within research and development group, controlling organization growth and manpower planning. In addition to, recruitment and selection, directing assignments, monitoring performance and career development planning.
  • Health & Safety – maintaining required safety and security compliance, making safety and security an integral part of every task. Ensuring all Associates have completed the requisite training on safety and security.
  • Budgetary Management – developing and implementing project budgets and cost centre expense plans and controlling and managing the financial plans to ensure cost effectiveness.
  • External Resources – identifying and using appropriate qualified external organizations to supplement in-house capabilities within approved project and operational costs plans and meeting project deadlines.
  • Cross Functional Coordination – maintaining effective relationships with other departments (Tunnel & Funnel R&D, Manufacturing, Engineering, Global R&D, Marketing and Quality Management) to facilitate the introduction of new or improved technologies. Providing required technical support and expertise to support ongoing Corporate projects and to achieve a smooth transition from R&D to NPD and Manufacturing. 

Education, Experience and Skills

  • Honours Degree in an Engineering or Science Discipline
  • MBA or equivalent preferable           
  • 10+ year’s relevant industry experience preferably in medical devices
  • 2+ years management responsibility of R&D or other technical groups
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities both in terms of strategic direction of a group and people leadership
  • Expert level knowledge of and proven ability in the management and development of Associates
  • Demonstrated advanced analytical problem solving abilities
  • Exceptional organization and communications skills
  • Previous experience in technology and product strategy development and execution of research and development projects
  • Good working knowledge of polymer materials including surface modifications and coating technologies
  • Proven ability in conducting research and/or development activities, investigating and recommending solutions to problems affecting research and development activities, projects and/or initiatives
  • Demonstrated ability in budget preparation and oversight
