Senior Test Laboratory Engineer

Our client, a medical device company in Cork are currently looking to recruit a Senior Test Laboratory Engineer for their site.

Position Summary
  • Designs, develops, refines and evaluates mechanical and/or electro-mechanical systems for the testing and evaluation of medical devices and implants. Uses concurrent mechanical, electrical and software engineering to reduce product time to market whilst adhering to quality procedures and project deadlines.
  • You will plan, lead and execute successful projects, occasionally training team members on technical aspects of product testing and engineering principles.
  • Work with Design Engineers and Product Development Teams to understand testing requirements for new products. Lead projects to specify and develop unique test systems, methods and protocols to fulfil product development needs, verify Design Output = Design Input and meet requirements of Design Control regulations.
  • Perform gauge R&R and MSA on test equipment and methods to ensure reliability and repeatability of test results.
  • Research and develop methods and systems to characterise performance of bone and soft tissue cutting tools.
  • Design and build custom mechanical, electro-mechanical or pneumatic systems for testing new or existing components and products.
  • Use Labview or other software tools to create programs and robust interfaces to control robot / electro-mechanical test systems and to capture, analyse and store test data.
  • Evaluate and analyse new product development portfolio to anticipate possible testing needs and predict future capability requirements.
  • Research new technologies to meet future capability requirements. Identify and source new equipment. Manage introduction of new equipment including equipment qualification and validation to procedures and appropriate external standards.
  • Evaluate, recommend and maintain engineering related computer systems.
  • Assist Product Development Teams and other customers from initial concept development phase to final verification/validation, to ensure a smooth transition into, and through, the Test Lab.
  • Prioritise, schedule, design and perform routine to extremely complex experiments of a broad scope, which comply with regulatory requirements e.g. FDA and appropriate engineering standards.
  • Extract and analyse test data using appropriate statistical techniques. Prepare formal written test reports. Present data verbally and visually at Design Reviews and other meetings. May make recommendations to project teams based on test results.
  • Perform gauge R&R and MSA on test equipment and methods to ensure reliability and repeatability of test results.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • May coordinate the activities of 1 or more exempt and/or non-exempt employees.
  • May provide mentoring, where applicable, to other engineers, technicians and Co-ops.
  • May provide feedback on performance of one or more employees, based on pre-established performance parameters.
Qualification, Knowledge and Skills
  • Minimum Level 8 Bachelor of Engineering/Science with 2 or more years of experience or Master of Eng. /Science.
  • Demonstrated Strong Aptitude for both Mechanical and Electronic Engineering
  • Experience programming and using Labview or other software to control multi-actuator, electro-mechanical systems and capture data.
  • Experience working in Medical Device or other regulated industry.
  • Must be able to analyze and correct complex testing and/or systems issues of a broad scope using independent judgment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and lead projects and work as part of a cross functional team.
  • Demonstrated mechanical & electrical problem solving skills.
  • Advanced computer hardware/software skills.
  • Excellent analytical skills.
  • Ability to read, understand and generate complex engineering drawings, electrical schematics and component datasheets.
  • Experience with PLC processor logic and programming languages.
  • Demonstrated ability to use small hand tools (e.g. pliers, screwdrivers, wrenches, hammer, etc.), power tools and test/inspection equipment.
