Shifting Gears Part 4: Upgrading Your Career
Upgrading Your Career – Getting fit for purpose
Ok you may be starting to get use to our new conditions and beginning to concentrate on the things that we can change as opposed to the things we can’t. A good place to start is to limit the time you waste in front of the TV, turn it off! As you may have noticed the News just repeats itself and two short updates a day on gaining awareness of the situation is generally enough for anyone.
Once we have calmed our thoughts and claimed our sanity back we can reflect on this opportunity some of us have been presented with. A time to take count, get organised and move forward in our understanding and knowledge. Have you ever wished you had time to learn a new skill or even go back to University? Have you ever thought of honing your current skills and to specialise more in a particular area? If the answer is yes it’s your lucky day, or month(s)! The evidence already exists, that people are availing of this chance to learn again, and with technology at our fingertips this is now easier than ever. Take time to sit down and construct a clear plan of where you’d like to be in one or two months and how much time you can allocate to achieve your goals. Be realistic to though. Even if it’s an hour or two a day dedicating to upskilling or retraining, you’ll be pleasantly surprised how much you achieve in a short space of time.
Once you have defined your goals start researching what tools are available in order to reach your ambition. The challenge will not be finding a pathway or course but which one to choose from as there are so many now available. Don’t procrastinate too much though or this window or opportunity will be closed and you’ll soon be making the kids school lunches again or trying to find you phone before you leave for work.
Many online courses are also now free so don’t let finances stop you from exploring new and exciting ventures and if you are one of the lucky few that feels they know everything they want to know why not start teaching others.
Here’s a few resources to get you going and remember…. the only thing we have to fear, is fear itself. – F.D Roosevelt (at the peak of the Great Depression)
