“You have power over your mind, not outside events,” said Marcus Aurelius. “Realise this, and you will find strength.”
The legendary Roman emperor and Stoic philosopher might have made that observation almost 2,000 years ago, but his words still hold true today. Mind over matter: your thoughts are incredibly important, and how you choose to think and to view the world will quite literally frame the successes and failures of your life.
Some lucky individuals are gifted with a naturally positive mindset, but most of us have to work on it. Thankfully, it can definitely be done. Your mind is the most powerful tool you possess, and if you can learn to properly harness your natural mental energies you can live a life of almost no limitations.
The secret to success lies in learning how to tame your thoughts. If you want to develop a winning mentality, you have to learn how to focus your mind and control what you think about. Put simply: just because a thought comes into your head doesn’t mean you have to accept it. Negative thoughts tend to fester, and lead to even more toxic ones when we give them momentum. Such thoughts wind up living rent-free in your mind, consuming your valuable time and energy, and diverting you away from your true purpose.
Detachment is the key to eliminating toxic thoughts from your mind. Trust that ‘what’s for you won’t pass you’. Once you understand that you alone have ultimate control over what you think about, you can very purposefully change your mindset. Remember, your mind is simply the product of whatever thoughts you have allowed enter into it. Worrying about things that you can’t control or dwelling on past mistakes won’t help you – it will simply drain your strength. Better to shift your mental energies to thoughts of what you can achieve or create. You will reap what you sow, so try to deliberately plant thoughts that work for you rather than against you.
None of this is easy. Raising your consciousness to a higher level takes awareness of what we’re thinking about most, and gives you the ability to reach for the next highest thought that feels good. Expert psychological studies estimate that the average human mind thinks between 60,000 to 80,000 thoughts a day, so it requires constant maintenance.
We all understand the importance of maintenance when it comes to cars or equipment or houses. Whatever you don’t look after properly will inevitably break down, malfunction or decay. Your mind is no different. Our mental health is so important, and paying attention to your thought processes is worth investing in. Our thoughts create our emotions. You must nourish your mind daily with the kind of thoughts that will take you where you want to go in your life. Because if you allow negative thoughts to dominate your mind then they can often become your point of attraction.
Almost every successful person understands this. Whatever it is you’re trying to achieve, having the correct mindset is absolutely essential. As visionary car manufacturer Henry Ford once put it, “If you think you can do a thing, or think you can’t do a thing, you’re right.”
