Lead Mechanical Design Engineer
We are seeking a highly skilled Lead Mechanical Design Engineer to take a central role in the creation, development, and validation of advanced medical technologies, spanning both equipment and disposable components. This position requires a broad technical background, bringing together expertise in mechanical, mechatronic, electronic, and manufacturing disciplines to deliver innovative, compliant, and high-performing solutions.
The role will involve shaping product requirements into detailed design specifications, selecting optimal materials and manufacturing methods, and carrying out feasibility assessments and proof-of-concept builds. A key focus will be driving continuous improvements in design and production processes to ensure product quality, reliability, cost-effectiveness, and scalability.
Beyond technical leadership, this position includes managing multi-disciplinary project teams, applying structured project management practices, and leading risk management activities such as PHA, FTA, and FMEA. The engineer will also oversee problem-solving activities, supplier engagement, and provide guidance across the full product lifecycle. Leadership responsibilities will include team development, performance management, and the coordination of daily activities to achieve successful project delivery. The ideal candidate will be a confident communicator, experienced in leading design reviews and presenting technical insights to both internal teams and external partners, while maintaining an active interest in emerging technologies and industry best practices
Main Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the design, development, and validation of assemblies, sub-assemblies, components, and packaging.
- Define product specifications based on requirements and intended use.
- Select suitable materials, processes, tooling, automation, and equipment.
- Conduct engineering studies and proof-of-concept testing to evaluate feasibility.
- Drive improvements in design and processes to strengthen quality, performance, and cost-efficiency.
- Perform and lead risk management activities (PHA, FTA, DFMEA/UFMEA).
- Carry out root cause analysis and corrective actions following failures or non-conformances.
- Partner with manufacturing teams to resolve technical challenges and optimize processes.
- Manage projects and sub-projects, assigning tasks and providing guidance to cross-functional teams.
- Apply structured project management methods and report effectively to stakeholders.
- Investigate and integrate new technologies and engineering tools.
- Oversee recruitment, mentoring, and performance management of direct reports.
- Organize and prioritize daily team activities to ensure timely outcomes.
- Provide technical support to suppliers and external partners.
- Lead technical reviews and deliver presentations to stakeholders.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering (or equivalent).
- 6–9 years’ experience in medical device design, including at least 5 years leading mechanical design teams.
- Experience working on both capital equipment and disposable components within medical technology.
- Strong knowledge of engineering principles, root cause analysis, and design documentation.
- Skilled in GD&T, Design for Six Sigma (DfSS), DOE, and statistical analysis.
- In-depth understanding of materials, manufacturing processes, and design for manufacturability/assembly.
- Demonstrated leadership with clear accountability for deliverables and team outcomes.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Strong communicator with experience leading cross-functional project teams.
- Knowledge of quality and regulatory standards (EN ISO 13485, MDR, FDA CFR 820).
- Familiar with product development processes such as Stage-Gate or PDLC.
- High attention to detail, quality mindset, and strong documentation practices.
