Senior Materials Scientist/Formulation Chemist
Senior Materials Scientist / Formulation Chemist
Contract
R&D Materials + Drug Development
About the Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Materials Scientist / Formulation Chemist to join an R&D team working at the interface of materials science, chemistry, formulation and drug-device technologies.
This is a highly technical, hands-on role suited to an experienced industry scientist or an academic researcher/post-doctoral scientist with a strong track record in materials and formulation development.
The successful candidate will be responsible for applying a deep understanding of materials chemistry and material design principles to the development of novel materials and material/drug systems.
A key aspect of the role will be contributing to the development of new intellectual property (IP), making this an excellent opportunity for someone who has experience translating scientific research into novel technologies, formulations or products.
Key Responsibilities
Design, develop and optimise novel materials and formulations for R&D applications.
Apply fundamental principles of materials chemistry, polymer chemistry and formulation science to solve complex technical problems.
Investigate the interaction between materials and active pharmaceutical ingredients/drugs.
Develop and evaluate material + drug systems, including combination material/drug device technologies.
Design and execute laboratory experiments to investigate material properties, formulation performance and drug/material interactions.
Analyse experimental results and use scientific understanding to guide further material and formulation development.
Contribute to the development of novel technologies and intellectual property.
Support invention disclosures, patent development and technical documentation where appropriate.
Work closely with other R&D scientists and laboratory personnel within a multidisciplinary environment.
Troubleshoot technical challenges and develop innovative experimental approaches.
Maintain high standards of laboratory safety, documentation and experimental rigour.
Ideal Background
PhD in Materials Science, Materials Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Biomaterials, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Drug Delivery, Chemical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
Strong postdoctoral or industry R&D experience in a relevant area.
Demonstrable experience developing new materials, formulations or drug delivery systems.
Strong understanding of the underlying principles of materials chemistry and material design.
Experience with drug-device combination products, drug delivery systems or material/drug technologies is highly desirable.
Evidence of contributing to patents, intellectual property, invention disclosures or other novel technology development is highly desirable.
Strong experimental and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work independently and take ownership of scientific projects.
Excellent scientific communication and documentation skills.
Candidate Profile
We are particularly interested in candidates who have moved beyond purely analytical or routine laboratory work and can demonstrate genuine experience in designing and developing novel materials or formulations.
Both industry scientists and academic/postdoctoral researchers will be considered.
The ideal candidate will be intellectually curious, highly analytical and comfortable working in an exploratory R&D environment where the objective is to develop new technology rather than simply execute established processes.
