GE Healthcare: $40 Million Investment Boosts Carrigtwohill in Ireland

Tuesday, December 1st, 2015 – GE Healthcare has announced a significant $40 million investment in its manufacturing facility located in Carrigtwohill, Cork. With the support of the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation through IDA Ireland, this investment will not only enhance the facility's production capacity but also create new employment opportunities. The current workforce of nearly 500 employees is expected to grow by 140 people.

The focus of this investment is to expand the production capacity of medical imaging contrast media at the Carrigtwohill facility. This expansion will double the production output from 22.5 million to an impressive 43 million units per year. By bolstering its capabilities in manufacturing medical imaging contrast media, GE Healthcare aims to position itself as a global leader in the field of precision medicine and biopharmaceuticals.

Paschal McCarthy, Managing Director, Global Supply Chain at GE Healthcare, expressed his enthusiasm about this milestone, stating, "Today's announcement marks a significant milestone for our Carrigtwohill facility. As part of GE Healthcare's Life Sciences division, we take great pride in contributing to the growth and global demand for precision medicine, biologics, and advanced therapies such as cell and immunotherapies. Above all, this investment is a testament to the dedication of our talented workforce and their commitment to delivering the highest quality products in the market."

Richard Bruton TD, Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, acknowledged the importance of manufacturing as a key sector targeted by the Action Plan for Jobs. He commented, "Today's announcement of GE Healthcare's $40 million investment and the creation of 140 new jobs in Carrigtwohill is a significant boost for Cork and manufacturing in Ireland. We have seen a strong job performance in the manufacturing sector, thanks to the measures put in place to support its growth. I extend my best wishes to Paschal and the team for the success of this project."

Martin Shanahan, CEO of IDA Ireland, welcomed the expansion, emphasizing Ireland's thriving life sciences sector. He noted, "This nearly 100% increase in diagnostic tool production is a testament to GE Healthcare's confidence in the Carrigtwohill facility. IDA Ireland will continue to actively pursue further investments in the life sciences sector in the months ahead."

GE Healthcare's Cork facility, established in 1992, plays a crucial role in filling, packing, and distributing contrast media used in medical scans to over 80 international markets. Contrast media, commonly administered during MRI scans, enhances the visibility of internal body structures. The $40 million investment builds upon the $10 million production suite expansion at the Carrigtwohill facility in 2012, which increased the manufacturing capacity by over fifty percent at that time.
