Role: Principal R&D Engineer (Mechanical) Location: Clonmel, Ireland

About the Role We are seeking an innovative and hands-on Principal R&D Engineer to join our growing team in Clonmel. This is a senior opportunity for an experienced mechanical or biomedical engineer to lead the design and development of next-generation implantable neuromodulation technologies that make a direct impact on patients’ lives. The role combines technical leadership, design expertise, and mentorship, with the chance to influence both new product development and sustaining engineering initiatives. You will work across the full product lifecycle — from early feasibility and concept generation through to commercialisation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and contribute to the mechanical design and development of implantable devices and supporting instruments.
  • Act as an independent technical leader while mentoring junior engineers.
  • Drive design controls and ensure regulatory-compliant documentation (requirements, risk analysis, DFMEA, verification, etc.).
  • Collaborate with physicians, patients, marketing, manufacturing, and global teams to gather insights and ensure designs meet user needs.
  • Deliver innovative, manufacturable, and cost-effective designs, ensuring reliability and compliance with standards.
  • Support product builds, validation activities, and design verification testing.
  • File and contribute to novel intellectual property.
  • Stay up to date with emerging technologies, trends, and the competitive landscape.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Degree in Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering (minimum BSc; MSc or PhD desirable).
  • 7+ years of experience with BSc, or 5+ years with MSc, in medical device design and commercialisation.
  • Proven experience as a design originator/owner responsible for new product development of implantable or external devices.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks 3D CAD and industry drafting standards (ANSI Y14.5 or equivalent).
  • Hands-on experience bringing products through to commercial launch.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with one or more of the following:
  • Implantable pulse generators, implant leads, surgical tools, or handheld/wearable medical devices.
  • Materials science/biocompatibility (metals, polymers, plastics).
  • Usability assessment: animal studies, cadaver labs, preclinical or clinical evaluations.
  • Strong understanding of design for manufacturability and functional testing of mechanical assemblies.
  • Track record of innovation and delivering improvements or novel designs.

What We Offer

  • Opportunity to spearhead next-generation medical technologies with meaningful patient impact.
  • A collaborative, diverse, and high-performance R&D environment.
  • Competitive compensation package, including performance bonus, pension contributions, healthcare coverage, and additional benefits.
  • Access to a state of the art facility with R&D, manufacturing, and distribution on-site.
  • Career development opportunities and exposure to global cross-functional teams.

Who We’re Looking For We’re looking for someone who is not only a strong technical leader but also a collaborative innovator — someone who thrives on solving complex engineering challenges, mentoring others, and shaping the future of neuromodulation devices.
