Job Title
SQL Database Engineer
Job Description
We are seeking an experienced SQL Database Engineer to design, stage, and deliver a new Microsoft SQL Server environment, establishing clear standards and best-practice database architecture from the ground up. This role is central to migrating existing databases into the new environment while ensuring all current applications that depend on existing table structures continue to operate correctly or are updated as part of the migration.
In addition to core database responsibilities, the role will support application migrations where database changes require updates to application code. As such, programming knowledge—particularly in C#—is highly beneficial, enabling the successful candidate to understand, update, and support applications as they transition to the new database architecture.
You will work closely with application, infrastructure, and network teams to align the new SQL environment with an ongoing network segmentation project, while ensuring the databases remain stable, secure, well-monitored, and easy to support in a fast-paced, 24/7 manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, stage, and implement a new Microsoft SQL Server environment following best practices and agreed standards
- Define and enforce database architecture standards, naming conventions, and operational guidelines
- Plan and execute database migrations from existing environments to the new SQL Server platform
- Ensure applications using existing table structures are successfully migrated, validated, and supported
- Work on application updates where database changes require code modifications
- Collaborate with application teams to understand data access patterns and dependencies
- Align database design and deployment with network segmentation and infrastructure initiatives
- Implement monitoring, alerting, and performance diagnostics for SQL Server
- Troubleshoot and resolve database and application-related performance or stability issues
- Manage database security, including users, roles, permissions, and access policies
- Support database and application operations in a 24/7 manufacturing environment
Person Specification
Essential Skills & Experience
- Strong hands-on experience with Microsoft SQL Server (installation, configuration, architecture, and migration)
- Proven experience designing and implementing database standards and best practices
- Experience migrating databases and supporting production applications during transitions
- Solid understanding of SQL Server performance tuning, monitoring, and troubleshooting
- Experience managing database security, access control, and governance
- Ability to work effectively in an operationally critical, always-on environment
Desirable Skills
- Programming experience, particularly in C#, to support application and database migrations
- Understanding of application architectures and data access layers
- Experience modifying or supporting applications as part of database change initiatives
- Experience working in manufacturing or other 24/7 operational settings
